MERV 8, 11, and 13 — what each rating captures, and what your slot can take.
Slot depth first, MERV second. 4/5-inch media is how most homes get MERV 13 without eating the static budget.

| 11 | ≥20% of 0.30–1.0 µm; ≥65% of 1.0–3.0 µm; ≥85% of 3.0–10.0 µm |
| 13 | ≥50% of 0.30–1.0 µm; ≥85% of 1.0–3.0 µm; ≥90% of 3.0–10.0 µm |
- EPA consumer advice: if you upgrade, choose at least MERV 13, or as high as the system fan and filter slot can accommodate; consult a technician. (Same page; Guide to Air Cleaners in the Home, updated 17 Feb 2026.)
- MERV 13+ must show ≥50% removal of the smallest particles tested. (EPA.)
- MERV is a consensus standard. Filtrete MPR and Home Depot FPR are proprietary. (EPA Guide Q&A.)
- HVAC filters only clean air while the system runs — often less than 25% of the time in heating/cooling seasons. Filtration does not replace source control and ventilation. (EPA Guide.)
- EPA does not certify brands. (EPA Guide.)
Rough shopper crosswalk (not EPA)
Treat as approximate. WhatAirFilter publishes a similar table. MERV 8 ≈ MPR 600 ≈ FPR 5; MERV 11 ≈ MPR 1000–1200 ≈ FPR 7; MERV 13 ≈ MPR 1900 ≈ FPR 10. Filtrete MPR 1500 is commonly sold as a MERV 12-class filter — do not call it MERV 13.
Household → a range, not a SKU
The finder below outputs a range. It will not output MERV 13 as the selected rating for a 1-inch or 2-inch slot when the blower is unknown or PSC. Allergies and smoke raise the ask; they do not override static-pressure safety. See the 1-inch MERV 13 page (draft, noindex).
Affiliate after the answer: Filterbuy MERV 8/11/13 in the user’s size; FiltersFast if they have an OEM cartridge; Amazon Filtrete as backup for 1-inch MERV 8/11. We will not push 1-inch MERV 13 as the primary Amazon button.
